Refrigerators containing

ammonia as the coolant

Ammonia-based refrigerators (also called absorption-type refrigerators), such as those used in hotel rooms (for minibars) or in recreational vehicles and coaches, do not use CFCs or CFC replacements as the refrigerant, but contain a chromate-containing ammonia solution. The pressure in the cooling system is about 20 bar and this places special requirements on the technology used to evacuate the cooling circuit.

SEG has developed a mobile evacuation facility to treat refrigerators or freezers of this type. A mobile solution is the most practicable as the fraction of ammonia-based refrigerators in the total volume of appliances submitted for recycling is relatively low. The mobile unit is used whenever a sufficient number of ammonia refrigerators have been collected at a single site to make the use of the unit economical.
