Careful and controlled reprocessing is the key to SEG's success in 'rejuventaing' the many different materials that arise during the demanufacture of end-of-life refrigerator and freezer appliances.

On this page we list all the materials and components which can be recovered during the appliance recycling process:

Materials recovered during Step 1

  • CFC R 12 (R 22, R 600a, R 134a, R 506)
  • Ammonia-water mixture
  • Oil
  • Compressors
  • Glass plate
  • Capacitors
  • Mercury switches

Materials recovered during Step 2

  • CFC R 11 (Pentan C5H12)
  • Steel (about 90 % of the ferrous metal content of the appliance is recovered)
  • Non-ferrous metal / plastics mixture *
  • Polyurethane **

 * The non-ferrous metal / plastics mixture is processed in SEG's Materials Sorting and Production Centre to produce high-quality streams of shredded aluminium and ground polystyrene.

** Freed from CFCs, the polyurethane foam that was used as thermal insulation in the appliance is processed at SEG's Materials Sorting and Production Centre to yield the oil and chemical binder ÖKO-Pur. The binder is available in three grades and is packed in conventional recyclable bags.

SEG cooperates with a number of reputable companies to ensure that the materials and components from the demanufacturing process are recycled in accordance with SEG's exacting quality standards. Click here to learn more about our partners.
