About SEG

SEG Umwelt Service GmbH was founded in 1987 in Mettlach, Germany as an environmental services provider.

Towards the end of the 1980s, as ecological discussions became increasingly concerned with the high environmental risks associated with chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFCs), SEG began focusing its business activities on the recovery of CFCs from refrigerator and freezer appliances that had reached the end of their service life.

At this early stage, however, there was still no technology available with which to retrieve all the CFCs in obsolete refrigerator or freezer appliances.

SEG turned its attention to this problem and, with a team of highly skilled and creative engineers, developed (and has continued to develop) the technology needed to solve this problem. SEG's solution enables the greatest possible quantity of CFCs to be recovered from an appliance, thereby ensuring that these atmospheric pollutants can be completely and safely destroyed.

The technology that SEG has developed has set the standard for the responsible and sustainable recycling of end-of-life refrigerator and freezer appliances and has effectively defined the principle of 'demanufacturing'.

Process engineering from Mettlach has essentially established the benchmark for refrigerator and freezer recycling now being used across Europe. SEG plants and facilities have secured highly significant shares of the market in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

The SEG headquarters in Mettlach comprises:

  • SEG Head Office:
Administration; Visitors' reception; Training rooms etc.

  • SEG Engineering: Design, development and construction of plants and facilities for demanufactu-ring end-of-life refrigerator/ freezer appliances; Maintenance and repair work

  • SEG Materials Sorting and Production Centre:
Processing of materials flows from the refrigerator/ freezer demaunfacturing process; Production of high-quality secondary raw materials for reuse
